Updating Customers with the Status of Their Shipment

By: Paul McDuffy

Over the years there have been a lot of complaints about the courier service. If you tried to search online for comments and reviews about a New Jersey courier service you would likely find countless complaints, especially against the older companies which have refused to implement new technologies, or by those who have low levels of customer service. These two elements go hand in hand simply because the technology now available to a courier company allows them to offer a much higher level of customer service. The two are intrinsically tied up in each other now, and because technology is required now to provide customers with some of the things that they are looking for in a courier company, it is important to work with couriers who are staying on the leading edge of the new technology and software as it emerges.

One of the principle advances that technology has provided to the couriers in the world is that of increased package tracking. Package tracking used to be an imprecise science at best. Couriers would do their best to know where all the packages in there care were at all times, and customers could call to check on the delivery status, but there was no sure and computerized system for tracking those shipments. Now, with the implementation of technology advances like bar code scanners, GPS tracking systems, and signature capture and real time proof of delivery, it is possible to know exactly where any package is at any moment throughout the day, something which is extremely valued by many people who are shipping with these types of companies.

The old tracking style that allowed you to know the last major hub your package passed through is a thing of bygone decades now. It was never much more useful beyond knowing that your package was still on the road, but now, customers expect a much higher level of tracking services. GPS technology has built the expectation that a customer should be able to find out where their package is at any time of day. They also have the right to expect proactive status notifications, such as being notified immediately if anything has happened to slow the delivery of their package, as well as receiving instant delivery notifications via email or text message when their package has arrived safely to its destination. More and more courier companies that wish to remain competitive will be moving in this direction as the technology advances.
